Mortimer Brewster is living a happy life: he has a steady job at a prominent New York newspaper, he’s just become engaged, and he gets to visit his sweet spinster aunts to announce the engagement. Mortimer always knew that his family had a bit of a mad gene — his brother believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt, and his great-grandfather used to scalp Native Americans for pleasure — but his world is turned upside down when he realizes that his dear aunts have been poisoning lonely old men for years! When Mortimer’s maniacal brother, Jonathan. (who strangely now resembles Boris Karloff) returns on the night that the aunts were planning to bury the newest victim, Mortimer must rally to help his aunts and protect his fiancé — all while trying to keep his own sanity. as well. An uproarious farce on plays involving murder, Arsenic and Old Lace has become a favorite amongst regional theatres throughout America.
Carson Scholar
Zack Huang Wins First Place
Springdale Preparatory School student, Zack Huang, won first place in the Senior Individual Documentary category at the Carroll County History Day on March 1.
National History Day is held annually through local, state and national competitions. This year’s theme, “Rights and Responsibilities in History,” allowed students to research and draw their own conclusions about the significance of their chosen topic through a variety of media. Huang chose a documentary.
“My documentary was intended to relate to the broad topic of this year’s NHD topic,” Huang said. “As we have gone through in APUSH (AP U.S. History) class, I have linked this to the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Therefore I decided for the topic to be about how the Second Amendment is more than just a right but a responsibility passed down from the Founding Fathers.”
With a little guidance from his APUSH teacher, Ms. Alison Kraeck, and a nudge from his mom, Huang took on the research and filming himself.
“I started working on my scripts and outlines for about three days,” Huang said. “After that I had an interview with Ms.Kraeck about some things that could be effective in processing and reasoning my argument. Then I took about four days to edit the videos and around two days processing papers and annotating the bibliography.”
Huang will go on to compete at the Maryland History Day on May 3. From there, he might even move on to the National History Day competition.
He has a bit of advice for anyone wanting to enter a contest in the future.
Always try to be as innovative as you can, and as a lot of ways to present are offered, pick the one that’s easiest for you!”
